The Joker is a cautionary tale of supervillains and Batman. He first appeared in Batman #1 (Spring 1940), and was initially a crime lord with a dangerous sense of humor. Publication History

Initially conceived as an evil "court jester", the character was rejected by studio screenwriter Bill Finger as "too clownish", but he later took the idea to Bob Kane. Kane, who started out as an artist-player, liked the concept and supported it. Finger found a photograph of painter Conrad Veidt in the make-up for silent cinema's The Man Who Laughs, and simulated the Joker from this photograph. This shock was depicted in the Batman graphic novel The Man Who Laughs, which repeated the first situation with the Joker from 1940.

In a dozen of his own events, starting with Batman No 1 (1940), the Joker was a straight-up spy/mass murderer with an unusual appearance simulated based on the popular Joker-Board in playing cards. Notably, in the Joker's second appearance, subversion was planned: on the final page, the villain accidentally stabs himself, then rests lifeless while Batman and Robin are bitten throughout the night. DC editor Whitney Ellsworth decided that the Joker was too good a character to kill and suggested sparing him; a hastily drawn pavement was added to the comic book, designed to point out that, in fact, the Joker is still alive.

In various incidents, the Joker often evades capture, but meets a trivial death (falling off a mountain, finding himself in a glowing building, etc.) and his body is never found afterwards. The Joker returned, but he was obviously less lethal than in previous episodes. Origin

Joker has several variations in his origin.

DC Rebirth

Eventually, the Joker falls in the final crisis as a member of the oriental secret society Supreme House of Libra. His period in Gotham City was leaked by his late minion Guggi during "Siren Gotham City".

In the New 52, the Joker resumes his activities as an assassin and murderer pursued by the Gotham Police in Detective Comics.
