Joker Actors Ranked: Who Is The Best Joker?
They say a hero is only as good as his villain. And while Batman has a criminal underling who has sworn to eliminate him, the Joker is always around to try and knock him down from his perch.
Joaquin Phoenix is the latest actor to don the white face paint as the prince of crime in Todd Phillips' 2019 film, Joker.
Ahead of the film's release, we decided to rank all the Joker performances from worst to best.
5. Jared Leto
Warner Bros. PicturesIn Leto's interpretation, the character is now a gangster, but as such, nothing has changed from what we've seen before. And in fact, the most fascinating thing is how unfamiliar he is with the role!
Leto was overshadowed by Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and his lack of screen time summed up his performance as the Joker.
Leto made a lot of hype for Suicide Squad, but unfortunately it didn't live up to it.
4. Cesar Romero
20th TV Warner Home VideoMost people compare Romero's appearance as the Joker to his famous mustache, but some would say it was Romero who set the tone for the portrayal of the character.
His signature hysterical smile and sublime voice gave the character originality.
Considering the context of his concert over the course of 50 years, it's impossible not to notice how perfectly Romero portrayed the Joker for his own time.
3. Jack Nicholson
Warner Bros. PicturesJack Nicholson was the true MVP of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman, far surpassing Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne.
Nicholson is a brilliant artist, and his ability to give the Joker his own twist was absolutely felt in this film.
Starting with the unconventional suit and ending with a more criminal approach to the character, Nicholson managed to overcome the clown nickname and reveal the dark side of the hero like no other.
2. Mark Hamill
Television Distribution: Warner Bros. Hamill is widely recognized for his incredible work as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars television series, but he will no doubt continue to be recognized for his voice work as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham Asylum video games. Hamill was able to accurately capture the character of the Joker, and his inspiration for the TV series came from Hannibal Lecter, making him a dark and reckless character. Warner Bros. PicturesLedger's performance is so compelling that it's literally impossible to put him anywhere but at the top of this list. Ledger transformed the Joker from a comical villain to a misguided, dim-witted, destructive madman in The Dark Knight.
The little details that Ledger highlighted in this film (licking his wounds) almost made you feel sorry for him, but the way he tugs at your heartstrings is so repulsive that it makes you think the character's demise would have been quite benign.
1. Heath Ledger
